Chub is Closed.... Nassau is Open

We decided to call Chub Cay to see if the marina there had slips available as we were leaving Bimini.   We could only reach an answering machine which stated the whole island was closed.  No Joke!

Once there, we could see the serious damage to several of the houses from hurricane Matthew.  We spent the night in the beautiful but “rolly” anchorage, and in the morning we decided to float the dingy and check out the damage to the marina.  We soon discovered they had the entrance roped off with “Closed” signs.  So it was off to Nassau.

Four Days in Paradise Island waiting out bad weather

We had planned to skip Nassau entirely, but four days of pretty serious weather was headed our way and we wanted to get a slip somewhere.  So, Nassau it was, and really, what tremendous luck.

Last year we had trouble with our starter motor and when I started the diesel in Chub I noticed it didn’t sound right.   Once in our Nassau slip, I tried to restart the motor and nothing happened.  I decided to report the problem to the dockmaster because without further investigation who knew how long it would take to get parts, and he was already wanting to know our checkout date.  He was very helpful and suggested he could have a really good mechanic take a quick look and since it was getting late on a Friday I agreed… sooner to get potential parts on order the better.

The good news:  It took the mechanic 5 minutes to fix.

The bad news: He had a two hour minimum, and while it would have taken me WAY longer to fix, it likely would have been in my ‘mechanic’ comfort zone.

A bad connection to the starter motor solenoid was the only problem. Oh well, I decided to not look a gift horse in the mouth and instead do the only reasonable thing… celebrate at the bar with my wife and a margarita.

Nassau Restaurant #5000...  Wish we could have tried them all!

We quickly decided if you’re going to haul up for bad weather - Nassau is a fine place…… we rented a scooter and drove the island, went to the water park twice, and watched plenty of NCAA March Madness.  All good.
