Sailing with Mr. Abercrombie and Mr. Fitch

And that’s just what we did, continuing our trip north, but this time with my son Al and his friend Nathan, whom by the end of the trip we were affectionately referring to as "Mr. Abercrombie" and "Mr. Fitch".

We’ve had the boat in Charleston City Marina (the Mega Dock) for the month of May and after arriving with the boys and playing in Charleston for a few days it was finally time to shove off.

With two new high school seniors onboard dedicated only to their summer tans, it was a little like being in an Abercrombie Fitch commercial, or maybe Ralph Lauren, or maybe J-Crew......

You get the idea.

But it made for good use of the camera.

The first leg was an easy 65 nautical mile trip from Charleston to Georgetown light.  Light winds, easy seas.  We anchored in Mosquito Creek which had us worried about the mosquitos of course…. but we should have been worried about the huge horse flies.  Because of them, we did very little exploring, however, we did manage to have our somewhat traditional “first night out steaks”.

The second leg (82 NM) took us to Cape Fear, and immediately, we all liked the name.  Once we came into the channel, we motored down the ICW for a short while until we turned into Dutchman Creek.  A very nice “park like” area that gave a perfect chance for the boys to explore with the dingy.  We even saw an alligator on the way in… no joke.

Third leg was to Wrightsville Beach.  We pulled into Seapath Marina and I must say, that was maybe one of the best marinas I’ve ever visited.  We had a great slip with the beach nearby to the East and the ICW with its waterfront restaurants to the West.  It was "Dock and Dine" heaven.  I liked Seapath Marina so much I even bought one of their floppy hats.

As we know, all good things come to an end, and so it did with Wrightsville Beach and the two boys. It’s almost hard to say this, but the weather was too good.   The winds were so light we motored nearly all the time.  Nathan will have to return sometime when we aren’t running the yanmar diesel.  Early Friday morning we rented a car and drove to Durham North Carolina so the boys could tour Duke University.  Maybe Al will go there and we’ll happily dock the yacht in Wrightsville Beach a lot more…. Who knows?

This was our favorite pic, the boys found this half sunken boat when exploring on the dingy

We added the text and laughed all week.
